Vehicle Type Approval

To sell products in most areas of the world, vehicle, component and sometimes after-market component manufacturers must comply with local safety and environmental requirements.

Some of the major regions that enforce their own vehicle standards are:

• United States and Canada FMVSS / CMVSS / EPA;
• Australia ADR;
• Japan TRIAS;
• Europe EC / ECE;

Most other markets accept a combination of the European or US standards. Australia and Japan even accept the United Nations based ECE standards to some extent, in lieu of their own national requirements. Increasingly, as more countries accept ECE approvals as part of their vehicle registration process, these standards are gaining more prominence.
