System and Component Type Approval
Within Europe, approval of a complete vehicle is dependant on each of the various systems and individual components specified within the framework directive being approved to the appropriate EC or ECE standard. Certain items will need to be approved as individual components or Separate Technical Units (STU's), as well as being approved for installation on the vehicle, in order to meet the requirements of the Directive.
In addition to the requirements for Whole Vehicle, a number of standards also apply to after market products as well as Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. Examples of these include Tyres, Glass, Exhaust systems and replacement brake linings to name a few.
